SDP Suspends National Chairman Gabam Over Alleged Financial Misconduct

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has suspended its National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, over alleged financial impropriety and abuse of office. The decision, reached during an emergency session of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja, also affects the National Auditor, Nnadi Clarkson, and National Youth Leader, Chukwuma Uchechukwu.

In a statement issued Tuesday evening, the SDP accused the suspended officials of unauthorized handling of party finances, diversion of funds, and the submission of an unsanctioned financial report to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The affected officers have been suspended indefinitely, pending the conclusion of investigations into several breaches of trust and financial misconduct,”

The party alleges that substantial sums—believed to run into hundreds of millions of naira—were spent without due process or approval from the NWC. The publication of the unapproved financial report in national newspapers reportedly triggered outrage among party members and stakeholders.

In response, the SDP has appointed Sadiq Abubakar, Deputy National Chairman (North), as Acting National Chairman, and has established a special investigative panel to audit the party’s financial records and operations.

Tensions rose outside the party headquarters in Abuja as news of the suspensions sparked protests, with some members demanding further accountability and transparency within the party’s leadership structure.

Although,The suspended officials have yet to issue public statements addressing the allegations.

With preparations already underway for the 2027 general elections, political observers say this development could significantly impact the SDP’s organizational stability and public image.
