Senate Confirms Amupitan as INEC Chairman

By Erewunmi Peace

The Nigerian Senate has commenced the screening of Professor Joash Amupitan, President Bola Tinubu’s nominee for Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The development marks a critical step in the confirmation process for the country’s top electoral body.

Professor Amupitan, a respected scholar and election expert, appeared before the Senate Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Senators are expected to evaluate his qualifications, vision for electoral reforms, and plans to strengthen the credibility and transparency of future elections.

Speaking during the session, some lawmakers emphasized the importance of restoring public trust in the electoral process, highlighting the challenges of previous election cycles and the need for reforms to ensure free, fair, and credible elections across Nigeria.

While the screening process is ongoing, no official confirmation has yet been made. Observers note that the Senate may announce its decision once the committee completes its review and submits recommendations for a plenary vote.

The confirmation of Professor Amupitan, once concluded, will position him to lead INEC ahead of upcoming elections, with significant responsibilities in electoral oversight, technology deployment, and stakeholder engagement.
