Tears as Names of 24 Kwara Youths Killed While Defending Communities Are Released

By Erewunmi Peace

Grief and shock have gripped parts of Kwara North as the names of 24 young men who died volunteering to protect their communities from terrorist attacks have been released.

According to a report by Legit.ng, the deceased youths were among several local volunteers who confronted armed assailants that invaded communities in the Patigi and Edu Local Government Areas. The attacks reportedly left dozens dead and displaced residents from villages such as Chekpan, Lade, and other surrounding areas.

Community leaders and residents said the young men joined efforts to repel the terrorists after repeated security concerns in the region. “They were brave and selfless. These were sons, brothers, and breadwinners who stood up when fear silenced many,” a local youth leader was quoted as saying.

While Legit.ng confirmed the names of 24 victims through its independent investigation, it reported that over 70 people might have lost their lives in total. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement confirming the full casualty figure or the released names.

Security experts have called on the federal and state governments to strengthen security operations across Kwara North, warning that the persistent attacks are stretching local volunteer groups beyond their limits.

As families mourn and communities bury their dead, Nigerians across social media have poured out tributes, hailing the fallen youths as heroes who sacrificed their lives for the safety of others.
