Tension in PDP: Governor Peter Mbah plans defection to APC

By Erewunmi Peace
Fresh tension is brewing within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following reports that Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, may be preparing to dump the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to reports by Premium Times and Legit.ng, the governor has held a series of high-level consultations in recent weeks, with insiders suggesting he is considering aligning with the APC ahead of 2027. The move is said to be connected to internal wrangling within the PDP and concerns over the political future of the South-East region.
However, the governor’s spokesperson has dismissed suggestions of a finalized defection, insisting that Mbah remains committed to delivering his mandate to the people of Enugu State under the PDP.
The PDP has recently faced several high-profile defections, with some governors and lawmakers joining the APC amid claims of marginalization and strategic realignment. Governor Mbah, who was elected in 2023, has been viewed as one of the PDP’s rising figures in the South-East.
This development, if confirmed, would mark another blow to the PDP as it struggles to maintain its influence ahead of the next general elections.
The news has sparked heated debate online. While some observers argue that the governor’s alleged move is a pragmatic survival strategy, others accuse him of abandoning the PDP too early in his tenure.
As at press time, no official statement confirming Governor Mbah’s defection has been released. The situation remains fluid, and further updates are expected.
