Tinubu’s Endorsement: You May Be the Loser, Farounbi Warns Governor Adeleke

Former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr. Yemi Farounbi, has issued a stern warning to Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, following his recent endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in 2027.
Speaking in an interview, Farounbi cautioned that Adeleke could ultimately be the political loser if the endorsement was not backed by a firm, strategic agreement. According to him, political alliances should never be based on sentiment but on clear negotiations that guarantee mutual benefits.
“If the governor endorsed Tinubu without a negotiated deal that benefits the people of Osun or strengthens his own political standing, he may end up losing out,” Farounbi said.
The endorsement, which came as a surprise to many within the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has sparked mixed reactions, particularly as Tinubu is a stalwart of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Adeleke, a prominent PDP figure, had praised Tinubu’s leadership and expressed support for his 2027 re-election bid during a public event last week.
Farounbi, who is known for his deep political insight and past advisory roles, stressed the importance of political foresight, especially in a region where power dynamics are highly sensitive.
“We must remember that politics is a game of interests. Sentiment has no place if the interest of your people and your future in governance is not guaranteed,” he added.
Critics argue that Adeleke’s public support for Tinubu could create internal conflict within the PDP, weaken his support base, and affect Osun State’s political alignment in future elections. Supporters, however, see the move as a strategic effort to attract federal attention and development to the state.
As the 2027 elections draw nearer, political observers continue to monitor how this endorsement will shape Adeleke’s influence within the PDP and his broader political future.
