UI Goes Beyond Classrooms, Leads Efforts in Wildlife and Environmental Conservation

By Erewunmi Peace

The University of Ibadan (UI) is strengthening its reputation as more than just a center for academic excellence — it is emerging as a national leader in environmental protection, wildlife conservation, and climate-change advocacy.

Through partnerships, awareness programs, and student engagement projects, Nigeria’s premier university is demonstrating that education extends beyond classrooms into real-world impact.

UI has taken bold steps to integrate climate-conscious policies into its operations. The university recently announced initiatives focused on afforestation, tree planting, and green-space development, as part of efforts to make its campus more climate-change compliant.

According to reports from the institution, these actions align with global sustainable-development goals and demonstrate UI’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

The university’s experts have also been advocating for wildlife preservation, emphasizing the use of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence in monitoring endangered species.

During the 2024 World Pangolin Day, UI scholars and conservationists urged Nigerian youths to leverage technology to protect endangered wildlife and combat illegal hunting and deforestation.

“We must move from awareness to action. Technology can be a tool for saving endangered species and restoring ecosystems,”
— A UI environmental researcher stated during the event.

UI’s Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources has partnered with international institutions to train forestry practitioners across Africa.
The training focuses on landscape restoration, biodiversity conservation, and environmental governance, equipping participants to tackle Africa’s ecological challenges.

The university has also collaborated with UNICEF to educate over 1,000 students on environmental conservation, organizing tree-planting activities around the Awba Dam watershed and promoting community-based sustainability programs.

These ongoing projects highlight UI’s belief that the role of a university is not only to produce graduates but also to inspire social responsibility and environmental consciousness.

By combining academic research, student engagement, and international collaboration, the University of Ibadan continues to set an example of higher education that actively protects the planet.

From tree-planting campaigns to wildlife-protectionl initiatives, UI stands as a model of how Nigerian universities can extend their influence beyond classrooms — shaping minds while preserving the environment and safeguarding the future.
