UNN Disowns Minister Uche Nnaji’s Certificate, Registrar Faces Scrutiny Over Conflicting Letters

By Erewunmi Peace

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has again disowned the Bachelor’s degree certificate claimed by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, following the emergence of conflicting letters allegedly issued from the university’s registry.

In a fresh statement addressed to Premium Times and signed by F. C. Achiuwa on behalf of UNN’s Registrar, Celine Nnebedum, the university clarified that its records show that Nnaji was admitted in 1981 but did not graduate from the institution. The letter added that there is “no indication that the degree certificate being circulated was issued by the University of Nigeria.”

This revelation contradicts an earlier letter that appeared to confirm Nnaji’s graduation status — a document now believed to have been issued in error or without proper authorization.

University insiders told Premium Times that the management has launched an internal review to determine how the earlier correspondence was issued and whether disciplinary action should be taken against the registrar or any other staff involved.

“The University takes issues of record integrity seriously. Appropriate administrative procedures will be followed to address any discrepancies,” one source reportedly said.

As of the time of filing this report, the university has not officially confirmed any sanctions against the registrar, though internal investigations are said to be ongoing.

The controversy has reignited public debate on academic integrity and documentation within Nigerian universities, especially involving public officials.
