Viral Opinion Piece on Igbo-Yoruba Tensions Sparks Controversy Online

A provocative opinion article titled “Igbo vs Yoruba: When You Instigate, Expect Us To Retaliate” has drawn widespread attention across Nigerian online communities. Originally published by WesternPost and PM Express, the piece—written by columnist Fariu Adebobajo—claims that repeated provocations from one ethnic group toward another could trigger retaliation.
The article, framed in strong ethnic terms, has sparked debate on social media, with many Nigerians condemning the tone as inflammatory. Others argue it reflects long-standing frustrations over ethnic bias, political marginalization, and intergroup tensions—particularly in Lagos State.
However, it is important to note that this is not a verified news report but a personal opinion. No official statements from Yoruba or Igbo sociopolitical groups have confirmed any conflict or organized retaliation.
Fact-checkers have also flagged recent social media posts claiming violence between the two ethnic groups as misleading or entirely false. There is currently no confirmed report of inter-ethnic violence or coordinated group retaliation in any part of the country.
Observers are urging caution in consuming and sharing such content, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections when ethnic narratives tend to become more sensitive.
“Nigeria thrives when we promote dialogue and not division,” said one user on X (formerly Twitter).
