PDP Northern Leaders Endorse Ex-Minister Kabiru Turaki as Consensus Candidate for National Chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Northern Nigeria has endorsed Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), a former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, as its consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman.
The endorsement followed a series of consultations among Northern PDP stakeholders, led by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, who announced the decision on behalf of the group.
Fintiri explained that Turaki’s selection was based on his experience, loyalty to the party, and long-standing contributions to Nigeria’s democracy.
“After extensive consultations and deliberations, we have resolved to adopt Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as the Northern consensus candidate for the office of National Chairman,” Fintiri stated.
Turaki, who once served under President Goodluck Jonathan, is widely regarded as a unifying figure within the PDP. His endorsement is seen as part of the broader effort to stabilize the party’s leadership structure and prepare for the next national convention.
However, the endorsement does not yet amount to a formal appointment. The PDP’s constitution requires ratification by the National Executive Committee (NEC) or national convention before any new National Chairman can officially assume office.
For now, Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum remains the substantive National Chairman, following confirmation by the PDP NEC in August 2025.
Political observers say the endorsement of Turaki may signal a strategic realignment within the opposition party as it seeks to strengthen its national presence ahead of the next general elections.
