President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major shake-up in Nigeria’s military leadership with the appointment of new Service Chiefs. The announcement, made on Friday, marks one of the most significant changes in the nation’s security command since he assumed office.
According to a statement from the Presidency, the newly appointed Service Chiefs are:
General Olufemi Oluyede – Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)
Major-General W. Shaibu – Chief of Army Staff (COAS)
Air Vice Marshal S. K. Aneke – Chief of Air Staff (CAS)
Rear Admiral I. Abbas – Chief of Naval Staff (CNS)
Major-General E. A. P. Undiendeye – retains position as Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI)
President Tinubu, while addressing the new military heads, charged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and vigilance in the discharge of their duties. He emphasized the need for synergy among the armed forces to tackle the nation’s growing security challenges.
“Nigeria demands and deserves a military leadership that is alert, united, and professional,” the President said. “The confidence reposed in you must be justified through commitment, competence, and courage.”
The President also thanked the outgoing Service Chiefs for their service to the nation, noting that their contributions laid the foundation for the ongoing reforms in the defence sector.
The appointments come amid renewed efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen national security and restore public confidence in the fight against insurgency, banditry, and other forms of criminality across the country.
The new Service Chiefs are expected to assume office immediately.
