The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government of Nigeria have concluded the long-awaited renegotiation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU Agreement, bringing an end to years of protracted talks over academic staff welfare and the funding of public universities.
The union disclosed the development in a statement shared on its official Facebook page on Wednesday, confirming that both parties reached a mutually acceptable agreement after extensive negotiations.
According to the statement, the new agreement is set to take effect from January 1, 2026, with a scheduled review every three years. Key provisions of the deal include:
A 40% salary increase for academic staff.
Enhanced pension benefits.
Improved funding frameworks for public universities, including allocations for research, library, and laboratory support.
Measures to strengthen university autonomy and staffing conditions.
The renegotiation marks the end of a 16-year negotiation process that has previously led to multiple nationwide strikes, causing disruptions in the academic calendar and affecting thousands of students across Nigeria.
ASUU hailed the agreement as a step toward improving the working conditions of university lecturers and enhancing the quality of education in public universities, while the Federal Government described it as a milestone in its commitment to investing in tertiary education.
