Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has announced a significant increase in rural allowances for medical personnel posted to rural communities, aiming to improve healthcare delivery in underserved areas.
The announcement was made following an inspection tour of government projects in northern Borno, where the Governor highlighted the importance of incentivizing healthcare workers to serve in hard-to-reach communities.
Details of the Allowance Increase
Medical Doctors: Rural allowance increased to 100% of basic salary
Nurses and Midwives: Rural allowance increased by 40% of basic salary
This policy applies to healthcare personnel serving under the Borno State Hospital Management Board and is intended to address manpower shortages and encourage professionals to work in rural locations.
Government’s Rationale
Governor Zulum emphasized that the new allowance structure is part of a broader strategy to enhance healthcare delivery in rural areas, reduce absenteeism, and ensure residents in remote communities have access to quality medical care.
“We must provide incentives to our healthcare workers so that they can serve effectively in areas where they are most needed. This increase in rural allowances is a step in that direction,” Zulum said.
Impact on Healthcare Workers
Health experts and stakeholders in Borno have welcomed the increase, noting that financial incentives play a key role in attracting and retaining medical personnel in rural areas, where infrastructure and living conditions can be challenging.
The Governor also assured that further measures would be implemented to improve working conditions for medical professionals, including provision of accommodation and transportation support in remote areas.
