Anambra Govt Disowns Chieftaincy Title Conferred on Bianca Ojukwu, Labels Monarch a “Fake”

By Erewunmi Peace

The Anambra State Government has officially rejected a chieftaincy title recently conferred on Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, declaring it invalid and warning her against using it.

The title, “Anyanwu N’Awalu Ora,” was reportedly presented to Bianca Ojukwu at the Igu Aro Cultural Festival by Chief Austin C. Ndigwe, who the government says is not a recognised traditional ruler in the state.

Government Statement
The rejection was made public through a statement by Tony Collins Nwabunwanne, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs.

The statement stressed that:

Chief Ndigwe lacks the authority to confer any traditional titles in Anambra State.

The title is not recognised under Anambra culture, tradition, or law.

Bianca Ojukwu is advised to desist from using the title, as it has no legal or cultural backing.

“The chieftaincy title purportedly conferred on Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu is null and void. It is imperative that all parties respect Anambra laws regarding the conferment of traditional titles,” the statement read.

Legal and Cultural Context
In Anambra, only certified and government‑recognised traditional rulers are empowered to confer chieftaincy titles.

The law also requires relevant approvals for non‑indigenes to receive such honours.

The government noted that these conditions were not fulfilled in this instance.

Public Reaction

The incident has sparked discussions across social media and traditional circles, with many emphasizing the importance of verifying the authenticity of cultural honours before public acceptance.

Analysts say this serves as a reminder that traditional titles carry legal and cultural weight and should be conferred responsibly.

Bottom Line: The Anambra State Government has made it clear that the chieftaincy title given to Bianca Ojukwu is not legitimate, highlighting the need for vigilance and compliance with state laws on traditional honours.
