The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has formally withdrawn from the 2026 Osun State governorship race, ending months of speculation about his political ambition.
Basiru made the announcement in Osogbo during the inauguration of the secretariat of his political structure, Alubarika House. He said the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, party leaders, and major political blocs within the APC.
According to him, the move became necessary due to the “enormous responsibilities” attached to his national office, which he described as a role that requires full commitment if the ruling party is to remain strong ahead of upcoming elections.
“After wide consultations and deep reflections on my duties as National Secretary of our great party, I have decided to withdraw from the Osun governorship race,” Basiru stated. “This is not a step back from service, but a renewed commitment to strengthening our party and supporting those who will fly our flag.”
Basiru reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC and pledged to support whoever emerges as the party’s candidate for the 2026 governorship election.
During the event, he also announced a ₦50 million empowerment fund for members of the Alubarika Movement, aimed at supporting grassroots development across Osun State.
His withdrawal comes just weeks before the APC governorship primary scheduled for December 13, 2025, reshaping the contest and leaving the field open for other contenders within the party.
Political observers say Basiru’s exit from the race could significantly influence the party’s internal dynamics ahead of the primaries.
