By Erewunmi Peace

The United States Department of State has reportedly revoked around 85,000 visas of foreign nationals, including some Nigerians, as part of an intensified enforcement of visa compliance and security measures.

The revocation exercise, which has been ongoing since January 2025, targets individuals whose visa status violated U.S. laws, including overstaying, criminal offenses, or security concerns.

Over 85,000 visas across various categories have been revoked, including student visas and work permits.

Specific numbers of Nigerians affected are not publicly disclosed, though reports confirm that Nigerians are included among the affected foreign nationals.

The State Department cited reasons such as criminal activities, security threats, overstaying visa terms, and other public safety concerns.

Those whose visas have been revoked may face restrictions on future U.S. travel. Individuals are advised to contact U.S. consular services if they believe their visa has been wrongfully canceled or to understand the next steps.

A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said the revocations are part of an ongoing effort to maintain the integrity of the U.S. immigration system, protect public safety, and ensure compliance with visa conditions. The Department emphasized that all revocations follow a careful review process.

The revocation of visas, including those of Nigerians, highlights the importance of maintaining visa compliance while in the U.S. Authorities continue to stress that travelers must adhere strictly to the terms of their visas to avoid similar actions.
