Reports Emerge on Alleged U.S. Airstrikes Against Terrorist Targets in Sokoto
By Erewunmi Peace
Reports have emerged suggesting that the United States carried out coordinated airstrikes targeting suspected terrorist hideouts in parts of Sokoto State, in collaboration with Nigerian security authorities.
According to security and government-linked sources, the operation was aimed at militant groups believed to be affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) operating in remote areas of northwestern Nigeria.
Video footage circulating online has shown aerial strikes on locations described as terrorist camps, fueling public discussion about foreign military involvement in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.
While U.S. officials have acknowledged counter-terrorism cooperation with Nigeria, full operational details, casualty figures, and the identities of those killed have not been independently verified.
Nigerian authorities have, however, maintained that the operation was intelligence-driven and targeted at armed groups responsible for violent attacks and banditry in the region.
Security analysts note that Sokoto and neighboring states have witnessed increased militant and bandit activity in recent years, prompting expanded domestic and international security collaboration.
The Federal Government has yet to issue a detailed public statement confirming the extent of U.S. involvement, while investigations and security assessments are ongoing.
Residents in affected areas have been urged to remain calm as authorities continue efforts to stabilize the region and prevent further attacks.
