UNN Vice-Chancellor Faces Resignation Calls Over Alleged Tampering With Ex-Minister Uche Nnaji’s Records

By Erewunmi Peace

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, is facing calls to resign following allegations of tampering with the academic records of former Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji.

The controversy stems from revelations that Nnaji’s claimed degree certificate from UNN was never issued by the university. Nnaji reportedly presented the certificate in the past to substantiate his qualifications, but investigations revealed discrepancies that cast doubt on its authenticity.

Civil society organizations, including the Joint Civil Society Front (JCSF) in Enugu State, have demanded that the Vice-Chancellor be suspended or step aside to allow an independent and transparent investigation into the matter.

A federal high court recently rejected Nnaji’s attempt to prevent the university from releasing his academic records, allowing UNN to provide full access to the documents for verification. Meanwhile, the university has launched internal disciplinary proceedings to determine the extent of any misconduct within its administrative ranks.

The scandal has sparked nationwide discussions about academic integrity and governance in Nigerian universities, highlighting the need for stringent verification of credentials for public office holders.

As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders are closely watching for further actions from UNN and relevant authorities, including potential sanctions and reforms to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
