Taraba Speaker, Several PDP Lawmakers Defect to APC
By Erewunmi Peace
The political landscape in Taraba State took a dramatic turn on Monday as the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Kizito Bonzena, alongside several lawmakers elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development, which occurred during a plenary session at the Assembly Complex in Jalingo, marks one of the most significant shifts in Taraba’s political structure ahead of the next election cycle.
According to official announcements made on the Assembly floor, the Speaker and a group of PDP lawmakers submitted their letters of defection, citing internal crises within the PDP as their reason for dumping the party. They also noted the need to align with the federal government in order to ensure “greater development for Taraba State.”
Although figures vary across sources, multiple reports confirm that a large bloc of PDP lawmakers moved with the Speaker, giving the APC significant influence in the state legislature.
Political analysts believe the mass defection could reshape Taraba’s political direction and weaken the PDP’s long-standing hold on the state.
With this development, the APC now stands positioned to exert stronger control over legislative activities in the state.
