“I Fainted Last Week”: UNILORIN Students Cry Out Over 4-Hour Queues Amid Worsening Campus Transport Crisis

By Erewunmi Peace

Students of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) have raised alarm over worsening transportation challenges on campus, with some spending up to four hours waiting for shuttle buses. One student recounted fainting last week while waiting in long queues, highlighting the physical and academic toll of the crisis.

The complaints follow the recent relocation of the university bus park, which students say has made access to shuttles more difficult. Many have described the queues as “stressful” and “exhausting,” with some worrying that delays are affecting their class attendance and daily routines.

Parents and students have expressed frustration at the slow pace of improvement, noting that the current number of buses is insufficient for the student population. Social media posts have amplified the grievances, with photos and videos showing crowds of students waiting under the hot sun.

Responding to the concerns, UNILORIN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Wahab Egbewole acknowledged the challenges and assured students that relief is on the way. The university is expected to introduce 100 electric vehicles (EVs) to boost the campus transportation system and improve shuttle frequency.

Efforts are already underway to reorganize the shuttle system and ensure a smoother pick-up and drop-off process, with authorities promising continued monitoring to prevent future disruptions.

The transport crisis at UNILORIN underscores broader challenges in campus mobility, particularly for universities with large student populations, and highlights the urgent need for effective planning and investment in student transport infrastructure.
