25 Dead, 14 Missing as Boat Capsizes in Yobe State

By Erewunmi Peace

At least 25 people have been confirmed dead, while 14 others remain missing, following a tragic boat mishap in Yobe State, according to emergency officials.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening along the Yobe River near Garbi town in Nguru Local Government Area. Reports indicate that the canoe, carrying about 52 passengers, capsized while travelling from Adiyani town in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State to Garbi in Yobe State.

The passengers, mostly farmers, fishermen, and traders, were said to be returning from their daily activities when the boat overturned mid-journey.

Confirming the incident, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA) disclosed that 25 bodies have been recovered, while 13 passengers were rescued alive and taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate those still missing.

Emergency responders, local volunteers, and security agencies are working together to recover additional victims and prevent further loss of life.

Reacting to the tragedy, the Yobe State Government expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and assured them of support.

Authorities also renewed calls for improved safety measures on inland waterways, including avoiding overloading and ensuring the use of life jackets.

Boat accidents remain a recurring challenge in parts of northern Nigeria, often linked to overcrowding, poor vessel conditions, and lack of safety enforcement.
