By Erewunmi Peace
The Federal Government of Nigeria has proposed a comprehensive overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), including the establishment of a ₦2 billion Innovation Fund aimed at modernising the scheme and enhancing its relevance to contemporary workforce needs.
The announcement came during a stakeholders’ consultative forum on NYSC reforms, where officials outlined plans to make the programme digitally driven, financially sustainable, and sector-aligned. According to the proposal, the reforms will focus on:
Digital transformation: Introducing a unified digital platform to manage corps member registration, deployment, and skill acquisition.
Decentralised governance: Implementing a three-tier governance structure spanning federal, state, and local levels.
Innovation Fund: A ₦2 billion fund to support digital systems, skills acquisition programs, seed grants, and other reform initiatives.
Sector-aligned deployment: Ensuring corps members are strategically deployed to sectors that match their skills and national manpower priorities.
Officials stated that the reforms are designed to enhance transparency, improve welfare for corps members, and increase the impact of the NYSC programme on national development.
While the proposals have been widely welcomed, they are still at the draft stage, and implementation will depend on legislative approval and further planning by the Federal Government.
The proposed Innovation Fund is expected to serve as a catalyst for new opportunities within the scheme, equipping corps members with relevant skills and resources to thrive in Nigeria’s evolving workforce.
