Ministry, DSS Intercept Seven Trucks in Major South-West Lithium Smuggling Crackdown

By Erewunmi Peace

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in partnership with the Department of State Services (DSS) has intercepted seven trucks suspected of illegally transporting lithium ore in the South-West region of Nigeria.

According to officials, the operation followed credible intelligence reports that a convoy of trucks was mobilised to move illegally mined lithium ore from sites around Saki, Oyo State.

The joint task force, which included the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), tracked the vehicles across Oyo, Kwara, and Ogun States, successfully intercepting seven of them along the Okoolowo–Eyenkorin Expressway in Kwara State.

Officials say the drivers were taken into custody, and documents and mineral consignments from the trucks were recovered. One driver reportedly escaped before apprehension, leaving his vehicle behind.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development emphasized that the crackdown aligns with the government’s zero-tolerance policy on illegal mining and mineral theft. Dr Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting mineral resources, ensuring sustainable mining practices, and enforcing compliance with Nigeria’s mining regulations.

This operation is part of a broader effort to curb illegal extraction and trafficking of valuable minerals, including lithium, which has become increasingly significant due to its use in batteries for electronics and electric vehicles.

Officials warn that illegal mining activities not only undermine the nation’s economy but also pose serious environmental and safety risks for local communities.

The Ministry has called for public cooperation in reporting illegal activities in mining areas.
