Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to strengthening maritime safety, security, and environmental stewardship as the country intensifies its campaign for election into the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council under Category C.

At the 134th Session of the IMO Council in London, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, urged member states to support Nigeria’s bid, stressing that the country has demonstrated consistent leadership in promoting safe and secure shipping in the Gulf of Guinea and beyond.

Oyetola noted that Nigeria has significantly enhanced maritime governance through investments in security assets, improved regulatory reforms, and ongoing collaborations with regional and international partners. He highlighted initiatives such as the Deep Blue Project, enhanced port digitalization, and reforms within regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with IMO conventions.

According to the minister, Nigeria’s re-election into the IMO Council would enable the country to further contribute to global maritime policy while accelerating regional efforts to achieve safer and cleaner seas.

Oyetola emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to supporting the IMO’s mandate, strengthening global maritime cooperation, and championing sustainable blue economy development.

Nigeria is seeking re-election into Category C, which comprises nations with special interest in maritime transportation and international shipping.

The IMO Council elections are expected to take place during the ongoing Assembly, with member states voting on which countries will serve on the Council for the next term.
