FG Under Fire for Allegedly Snubbing Christian Who Topped Permanent Secretary Interview
By Erewunmi Peace
The Federal Government of Nigeria is facing backlash following allegations that a Christian candidate who topped the recent permanent secretary selection interview was overlooked in favour of another candidate.
According to a statement by the Arewa Christians and Indigenous Pastors Association (ACIPA), the Christian candidate reportedly scored 83%, yet was not selected, while another applicant who allegedly scored 54% was appointed instead.
The group condemned the decision, describing it as an act of religious bias and injustice, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order a review of the process.
“This is a clear case of discrimination. Merit should not be sacrificed on the altar of religion or ethnicity,” ACIPA said in its statement.
The association also claimed it has written petitions to the President, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Minister of Justice, and the National Assembly, urging immediate intervention.
As of press time, there has been no official response from the Federal Government or the Office of the Head of Civil Service regarding the allegations.
The reported case has sparked debates across social and religious circles, with many Nigerians demanding greater transparency and fairness in civil service appointments.
Observers say the issue highlights growing public concern over religious representation and meritocracy in Nigeria’s federal institutions.
