EFCC Seals Ex-Minister Timipre Sylva’s Abuja Residence Amid Ongoing Probe

By Erewunmi Peace

The EFCC has sealed off the Maitama residence of former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and ex-Bayelsa Governor Timipre Sylva, prompting strong condemnation from his camp.

What happened

EFCC operatives reportedly carried out the sealing of the Abuja home without issuing any prior notification, letter, subpoena or warrant to Sylva or his family.

According to Sylva’s Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Julius Bokoru, the residence was spray-painted in red with the words “EFCC — KEEP OFF.” The aide described the move as a “grave breach of decency” and a violation of legal and human rights.

Background: Fraud Allegation & “Wanted” Status

The sealing comes after EFCC earlier — on 10 November 2025 — declared Timipre Sylva wanted for alleged conspiracy and the dishonest conversion of US $14.859 million, funds linked to a contract involving the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited.

The finance-linked allegation is part of a broader anti-graft drive by EFCC targeting former high-ranking public office holders.

Reaction from Sylva’s Camp

In a statement, Julius Bokoru said the sealing was “arbitrary, vindictive, and inconsistent with the values of an institution established to uphold justice.”

He alleged that Sylva’s family — including children, relatives and staff — have been “effectively encircled” within the sealed residence for weeks, pointing to the emotional and psychological distress such action could inflict.

The camp insists the sealing is politically motivated and not a reflection of any legitimate court order, adding that no official communication about the action was given.

What Remains Unclear

As of now, EFCC has not released a detailed public statement explaining the legal basis or court order (if any) that justified the sealing of the property.
