Yoruba Youth Group Opposes Planned Chieftaincy Title for Senator Abdulaziz Yari

A socio-cultural group, the Yoruba Youth Council (YYC), has expressed strong opposition to the planned conferment of a prestigious traditional title on former Zamfara State Governor and current Senator, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar.
In a statement released on Sunday, the group criticised what it described as the growing trend of honouring political figures with unresolved allegations linked to insecurity and corruption, warning that such actions could undermine the moral authority of traditional institutions in Yorubaland.
The YYC’s reaction follows reports that the Alaafin of Oyo is set to confer a chieftaincy title on Senator Yari during an upcoming traditional ceremony. The planned event has generated mixed reactions across social and political circles, with youth groups and civil society organisations raising concerns over the
symbolism of the honour.
According to the Yoruba Youth Council, traditional titles should be reserved for individuals with records of integrity, service, and positive contributions to society. The group argued that public trust in cultural institutions could be weakened if titles are perceived to be awarded without sufficient consideration of public sentiment.
“Traditional honours should reflect the values, history, and dignity of the Yoruba people. Any action that appears to ignore these values may attract legitimate criticism,” the statement read.
It is important to note that Senator Abdulaziz Yari has not been convicted of any crime, and allegations referenced in public discourse remain subjects of debate rather than judicial findings. Supporters of the former governor have maintained that traditional rulers retain the constitutional and cultural authority to bestow titles as they deem fit.
Meanwhile, sources close to the palace indicate that preparations for the chieftaincy ceremony are ongoing, with no official announcement suggesting a cancellation or postponement of the event.
The development highlights a broader national conversation on the role of traditional institutions in modern Nigeria, particularly regarding their relationship with politics, public accountability, and youth expectations.
As reactions continue, observers say the situation underscores the need for dialogue between traditional authorities, youth groups, and the wider public to preserve cultural heritage while responding to evolving societal values.
