I’m Receiving Death Threats Over Tax Reform Implementation — Oyedele

By Erewunmi Peace

Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, has revealed that he has been receiving death threats as a result of his involvement in implementing Nigeria’s new tax reforms.

Oyedele made the disclosure during a public event in Abuja on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, explaining that tax reform efforts often face resistance from individuals and groups whose interests are affected by changes to the system.

He emphasized that the threats reflect the challenges of pursuing far-reaching reforms aimed at improving transparency, compliance, and revenue collection in the country.

Oyedele called on Nigerians who support the reforms to speak up, noting that public engagement is crucial to countering misinformation and opposition that threatens the success of the reform process.

He also reassured citizens that the government remains committed to implementing comprehensive tax policies designed to strengthen the economy while ensuring fairness and accountability in revenue generation.

The chairman’s statement highlights the personal risks faced by public officials leading reform initiatives in sensitive areas such as taxation, even as the government seeks to modernize Nigeria’s fiscal system.
