Vatican Speaks on Nigeria’s Insecurity, Says Violence Not Targeted at Christians Alone
By Erewunmi Peace
The Vatican has reacted to claims of genocide against Christians in Nigeria, stating that the persistent killings and insecurity in the country affect both Christians and Muslims.
Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, made the remarks in Rome during the presentation of a report on global religious freedom by Aid to the Church in Need (ACN). He acknowledged that violence and attacks on religious groups exist in Nigeria but stressed that they should not be classified solely as a “Christian genocide.”
According to him, the crisis has deep roots in ethnic tensions, socio-economic struggles, farmer–herder clashes, and extremism, which have led to the loss of lives across religious lines. He noted that Muslim communities in the country have also suffered greatly from terrorism and armed groups.
Parolin called for stronger security response from authorities and a unified effort among Nigerians to restore peace and protect the rights of all citizens, regardless of their faith.
The Vatican’s stance follows ongoing debates among international observers and religious groups on how to define the scale and motives of violence occurring in northern and central Nigeria.
