By Erewunmi Peace
The National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) has officially introduced the National Minimum Standards for Secondary Education, setting clear benchmarks for quality, infrastructure, and teaching in senior secondary schools across Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of NSSEC, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, announced that the rollout is aimed at ensuring uniformity, improving learning outcomes, and enhancing the quality of secondary education nationwide.
Teacher qualifications: Establishing minimum educational and professional standards for teachers in senior secondary schools.
Teacher-student ratios: Setting appropriate limits to ensure effective learning and attention to each student.
Infrastructure requirements: Guidelines on classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and other facilities necessary for quality education.
Curriculum compliance: Ensuring all schools adhere to the national curriculum for senior secondary education.
NSSEC has tasked state governments to implement these standards within a specified timeline, typically 12 months, to ensure that all senior secondary schools comply. The commission emphasized that adherence will be monitored and evaluated periodically.
Dr. Ajayi stated:
“Our goal is to standardize senior secondary education across Nigeria, so that every student has access to quality learning regardless of their location.”
