By Erewunmi Peace

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a 60 percent increase in the federal health budget, a move aimed at strengthening the nation’s healthcare system and improving access to quality services.

According to reports, the health budget has risen from approximately ₦131.5 billion in 2024 to nearly ₦299 billion in 2026. The increase is part of the government’s strategy to enhance vaccine procurement, epidemic preparedness, primary healthcare revitalization, and workforce expansion across the country.

The Minister of Health emphasized that the budgetary increase aligns with ongoing reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to improve healthcare delivery and public health outcomes nationwide.

Experts have welcomed the move, noting that sustained funding is critical to tackling health challenges such as preventable diseases, maternal and child health issues, and improving overall healthcare infrastructure.

The government has also indicated that careful monitoring will ensure the allocated funds are efficiently deployed to maximize impact and reach underserved communities.
