FG Secures Release of 100 Pupils Abducted From St. Mary’s Catholic School

By Erewunmi Peace

The Federal Government has secured the release of 100 pupils abducted from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School, Papiri, in Niger State.

The children were among over 300 students and staff kidnapped during a deadly attack by armed bandits on 21 November 2025. The incident triggered nationwide outrage and renewed calls for stronger security measures in schools across northern Nigeria.

In an update on Sunday, federal authorities confirmed that 100 of the abducted pupils had regained freedom and were in government custody for medical checks, debriefing and immediate reunification with their families.

According to government officials, the rescue operation was the result of “sustained pressure, coordinated operations, and intelligence efforts,” though specific details on how the release was secured were not publicly disclosed.

Background of the Abduction

The attackers invaded the school during morning hours, abducting over 300 people — including 303 pupils and 12 teachers. In the days following the attack, around 50 students reportedly escaped and were reunited with their families.

Children Still Missing

Despite Sunday’s breakthrough, over 150 pupils and 12 teachers remain unaccounted for. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to ensure their safe return.

Human rights groups and local community leaders have urged the government not to relent, stressing that the remaining captives must be rescued without delay.

Reactions

Parents in the Papiri community expressed mixed emotions — relief over the release of the 100 children, but growing anxiety for those still in captivity.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said it is awaiting full official documentation and has called for a nationwide prayer support for the remaining hostages.

What Happens Next

The rescued pupils are expected to undergo comprehensive medical evaluations before their families are invited for official handover. Security sources say operations will continue until all abducted students and teachers are safely recovered.
