Serial Impersonator Accused of Using CIOB Name to Promote Fake Summit Featuring Tinubu, Wike

A Nigerian man, Kunle Onabekun, has been accused of organizing a fake professional summit using the name of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) — despite being disowned by the UK-based institution for alleged impersonation.
According to a recent investigation by Peoples Gazette, Onabekun promoted an event titled “Economic Impact of the Built Environment Summit”, scheduled to be held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. Promotional materials for the event listed President Bola Tinubu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and other top government officials as participants and award recipients.
However, the summit did not take place, and several listed public officials denied involvement. A spokesperson from Mr. Wike’s office reportedly confirmed that the minister did not attend, nor did he authorize the use of his name or image.
The Chartered Institute of Building was said to have expelled Onabekun from its membership over allegations of unauthorized representation. The institute had previously disclaimed any connection to his activities as far back as 2023, warning the public against dealing with him under its name.
Despite this, reports say Onabekun continued using the CIOB identity to market events, sell participation slots, and issue award invitations to unsuspecting professionals.
As of the time of publication, there have been no confirmed reports that President Tinubu or Minister Wike suffered financial loss as a result of the alleged impersonation. Law-enforcement agencies have also not announced any arrest or prosecution connected to the case.
The incident has once again raised concerns about event-based fraud, unauthorized professional certifications, and the ease with which impersonators can exploit the names of public officials to gain legitimacy.
Further updates will be provided as more official statements become available.
