NDLEA Uncovers Illicit Drugs Packaged as Christmas Cookies in Lagos

By Erewunmi Peace

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a shipment of illicit drugs disguised as Christmas cookies and snacks in Lagos State, dismantling what it describes as a social-media–driven drug distribution network.

According to NDLEA, the suspects had packaged cannabis in colourful sachets and boxes designed to resemble imported holiday treats. The disguised packaging reportedly targeted unsuspecting buyers, especially during the festive season.

During a raid at the suspects’ hideout on Ojulari Street, Ikate, Lekki, Lagos, the agency arrested two key suspects and recovered about five kilograms of cannabis, along with packaging materials meant to resemble cookies and snacks.

NDLEA spokesperson revealed that the suspects were operating a network using social media and WhatsApp to distribute the illicit substances. The agency noted that the seizure was part of its ongoing effort to curb the sale of disguised or masked narcotics, which can easily reach unsuspecting consumers.

The agency also warned the public to exercise caution, especially during festive periods, as criminals often exploit holidays to market illicit substances in misleading packages. NDLEA emphasized that anyone found trafficking drugs will face prosecution under Nigerian law.

This recent bust underscores the increasing ingenuity of drug traffickers in Nigeria and highlights the need for constant vigilance by law enforcement agencies and the public.
