By Erewunmi Peace

The University of Ibadan (UI) has formally admitted a 69-year-old woman, Mrs. Kate Bosede Akomolafe, into its Distance Learning Centre (DLC) for the 2024/2025 academic session.

Akomolafe, a retired Data Processing Officer, was among over 5,000 newly admitted students in 16 academic programmes during the ceremony. She disclosed that although she already holds a Certificate in Data Processing and Computer Studies, she returned to write WASSCE/NECO in 2023 to meet the entry requirements and fulfil her long-time educational dream.

The 69-year-old previously worked with R.T. Briscoe Motor Company before retirement. She said her motivation was driven by the desire to improve herself academically and prove that age should never be a barrier to learning.

The University’s Distance Learning Centre leadership commended her determination, noting that her story would inspire other adults who still aspire to further their education.

Akomolafe expressed gratitude to God, her family, and the university for giving her the opportunity to pursue her degree despite her age. She encouraged other elderly Nigerians to keep pursuing their goals and remain lifelong learners.
