Tinubu Urges Collective Action as ECOWAS Confronts Coups, Terrorism
By Erewunmi Peace
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to adopt a united and collective approach in tackling the rising threats of military coups, terrorism, and regional insecurity.
The president made the call during an ECOWAS summit of Heads of State and Government, where he emphasised that no single nation can effectively address the region’s security challenges in isolation. He stressed the need for stronger cooperation, intelligence sharing, and coordinated responses among member states.
President Tinubu warned that the increasing wave of unconstitutional changes of government and violent extremism poses a serious threat to democracy, peace, and economic stability across West Africa. According to him, collective resolve and decisive regional action are essential to safeguarding democratic institutions.
He further urged ECOWAS to remain firm in defending democratic values while addressing the underlying causes of insecurity, including poverty, unemployment, and weak governance structures.
ECOWAS leaders at the meeting reiterated their commitment to strengthening regional mechanisms aimed at preventing coups and combating terrorism. Discussions also focused on enhancing border security and supporting member states facing security crises.
The call comes amid growing concerns over political instability and terrorist activities in parts of West Africa, which have strained regional relations and development efforts.
President Tinubu’s appeal underscores Nigeria’s position as a leading voice within ECOWAS and its continued advocacy for unity and collaboration in addressing shared regional challenges.
