Federal Government Approves Retirement Age Extension for Clinical Health Workers
By Erewunmi Peace
The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved an extension of the retirement age for clinically skilled health workers, raising it from 60 to 65 years.
The approval, granted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system by retaining experienced medical professionals and addressing the shortage of skilled personnel in public health institutions.
The decision was confirmed by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and conveyed through the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.
According to the association, the policy applies primarily to doctors and other clinically trained healthcare workers whose expertise remains critical to service delivery and mentorship within the health sector.
Health sector stakeholders have welcomed the move, describing it as a strategic step to curb the impact of the ongoing migration of health professionals, commonly referred to as the “japa” phenomenon.
The extension is also expected to improve continuity of care and provide additional support for younger medical practitioners through extended mentorship.
Implementation of the new retirement age is expected to be formalised through the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the relevant government establishment bodies.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to improving working conditions in the health sector and ensuring a more sustainable healthcare workforce nationwide.
