Nollywood Producer Don Pedro Obaseki Assaulted in Benin City

Nollywood producer and media executive Don Pedro Obaseki was reportedly assaulted and publicly humiliated by a group of suspected thugs in Benin City on Sunday, 28 December 2025.
Eyewitness accounts and viral videos show Obaseki being beaten, stripped naked, and dragged through parts of the city before being taken near the Oba of Benin’s palace.
The attackers allegedly accused him of being disrespectful to Oba Ewuare II, labeling him an “enemy of the monarch.”
Obaseki has publicly described the experience as humiliating and traumatic, denying any disrespect toward the Oba. He was later released after police intervention.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and concerned citizens, calling for accountability and proper investigation.
Amnesty International and other groups emphasized that all disputes must be handled according to Nigerian law.
The attack has sparked public debate about the intersection of traditional authority and modern law in Nigeria. Observers note that while Benin City is historically governed by its traditional institutions, it remains under the jurisdiction of Nigerian law, which guarantees protection against mob violence.
Security agencies are reportedly investigating the incident, and authorities have been urged to ensure the safety of citizens and uphold the rule of law.
