Abuja, Nigeria — Senator Francis Fadahunsi has raised concerns over Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, attributing the situation to the leadership of the Ministry of Defence.

According to Fadahunsi, the Minister and Minister of State of Defence are largely businessmen, not retired generals or career military officers, which he claims undermines the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security apparatus.

Speaking during a plenary session, the senator stated, “The minister is not a retired general, the minister of state, all of them are businessmen. This is one of the reasons insecurity continues to persist in our country.”

Fadahunsi’s remarks highlight growing criticism over the appointments of key security officials, with some arguing that professional experience in the military or security sector is essential for effectively managing national defence and security operations.

While the Ministry of Defence has not responded to the comments, analysts say that bridging the gap between civilian oversight and professional military expertise is crucial for tackling rising security threats in Nigeria.
