U.S. Confirms Airstrikes on Islamic State Militants in Northwest Nigeria

By Erewunmi Peace

The United States has confirmed that it carried out airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) militants operating in northwest Nigeria, according to a statement by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump announced that the strikes targeted Islamic State fighters accused of carrying out deadly attacks on civilians in the region. The operation reportedly took place in Sokoto State, an area that has experienced rising insecurity linked to extremist and armed groups.

U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed the strikes, stating that they were conducted in coordination with the Nigerian government as part of ongoing counter-terrorism cooperation between both countries.

Nigerian authorities acknowledged the operation and emphasized that the country’s security challenges affect people of all religious backgrounds, noting that both Muslims and Christians have been victims of extremist violence.

Security experts say the development reflects growing international concern over the expansion of Islamic State-linked groups in West Africa, particularly outside the group’s traditional strongholds in northeastern Nigeria.

The Nigerian government has continued to call for international support in addressing terrorism and banditry while reaffirming its commitment to restoring peace and stability across the country.
