Kwara Closes Schools Indefinitely in Four LGAs Following Rising Bandit Attacks

By Erewunmi Peace

The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate and indefinite closure of schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti Local Government Areas, citing increasing insecurity and recent bandit attacks.

The decision follows the deadly attack on a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Ekiti LGA, which heightened fears among residents and authorities. According to the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWSUBEB), at least 45 public schools have already been closed in some communities due to security concerns.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has confirmed that schools will remain shut until security agencies declare the areas safe for reopening. Boarding schools in Irepodun LGA are also included in the closure order.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq described the measure as a precautionary step to protect students, staff, and communities, emphasizing that it is temporary and subject to review based on developments in the affected areas.

Parents and residents have expressed mixed reactions, with many praising the government for prioritizing safety, while some worry about the potential disruption to academic activities.

The Kwara State Government has assured the public that additional security personnel will be deployed to the affected LGAs and that schools will reopen once the situation stabilizes.
