IBB Calls on Tinubu to Arrest Gumi, Some Groups Voice Support

By Erewunmi Peace

Former Head of State Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has publicly urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take action against individuals he described as “bandit sympathizers,” including Sheikh Ahmad Gumi.

IBB made the call amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly the rise of bandit attacks and kidnappings in parts of the country. He emphasized the need for the government to investigate and, where necessary, prosecute those allegedly aiding or supporting criminal networks.

Following IBB’s statement, some civil society groups have expressed support for his call. Notably, the Hausa Activism Network (HAN) issued a statement backing the former Head of State, urging the government to act decisively against individuals suspected of facilitating or sympathizing with bandits.

However, critics argue that such calls must be carefully evaluated, noting that Gumi has previously described his engagement with bandits as part of peace-building and negotiation efforts, rather than support for criminal activity. Human rights groups stress that any legal action should adhere strictly to due process and Nigerian law.

Security analysts say the development reflects growing public debate over the role of intermediaries like Gumi in addressing Nigeria’s banditry crisis, highlighting the tension between peace negotiations and law enforcement.

As of now, the government has not publicly announced any move to arrest or prosecute Sheikh Gumi or other individuals named in IBB’s call.
