By Erewunmi Peace
The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has applauded the Achimota Circuit Court in Ghana for sentencing a Nigerian national, Chukwudi Nwachukwu, to 10 years imprisonment for human trafficking.
According to reports, the 29-year-old convict was arrested for trafficking 10 young Nigerian women — including his own sister — into Ghana for prostitution. After the court found him guilty on two counts of human trafficking, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay GH¢15,000 compensation to each of the victims.
Dabiri-Erewa described the judgment as a strong message against human trafficking and exploitation. She emphasized that Nigerians committing criminal acts abroad will not be spared justice, while also stressing the need for more awareness and collaboration to protect vulnerable citizens from traffickers.
She further urged Nigerians to travel legally and avoid deceptive offers that could lead to exploitation.
The victims are currently under the care of the Human Trafficking Secretariat in Ghana, undergoing rehabilitation and support services to reintegrate into society.
The NIDCOM boss reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to partnering with international authorities to combat human trafficking and ensure perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
