Kwara Monarch, Six Others Escape as Vigilantes Launch Fierce Attack on Bandits

By Erewunmi Peace

The Ojibara of Bayagan in Ifelodun Local Government Area, Kwara State, Oba Kamilu Salami, and six other abductees have reportedly escaped from armed bandits following a vigilante attack on their forest hideout.

Community sources said the monarch and the others were rescued after vigilantes launched a fierce operation inside the forest where they had been held captive. The bandits had earlier demanded a ransom of ₦150 million, but the intervention allowed the captives to flee.

Eyewitnesses reported that the escape was chaotic, with shots fired during the operation, but the monarch and six others managed to get free. While they have made contact with community members to confirm their escape, they have not yet physically returned to Bayagan.

The incident has heightened concern over the rising spate of kidnappings in Kwara State and across Nigeria, with residents praising the courage and swift action of local vigilantes. Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the rescue.

Authorities continue to monitor the forest areas for remaining bandits and are encouraging communities to report suspicious movements to help prevent further kidnappings.
