Tinubu Government Condemns Peter Obi Over Alleged Support for Foreign Military Action

By Erewunmi Peace

The Presidency under President Bola Tinubu has condemned former presidential candidate Peter Obi, declaring that it will “never forgive” him for allegedly supporting foreign military intervention in Nigeria. The statement came from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

The controversy arose from a video in which Obi allegedly welcomed possible U.S. military involvement in Nigeria to address the country’s ongoing security challenges. While the Presidency described Obi’s remarks as tantamount to endorsing a foreign invasion, Obi’s aides insist that his comments were misrepresented, emphasizing that he only advocated for international cooperation and diplomatic support.

Onanuga stated that the government views Obi’s alleged statement as “unpatriotic” and a threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty, warning that such actions would not be forgiven.

The incident has sparked widespread debate across political circles and social media, with analysts noting that it adds to the growing tension ahead of the 2026 general elections. Some Nigerians are calling for a measured interpretation of Obi’s remarks, urging both parties to clarify their positions to avoid escalating political conflict.

Peter Obi has yet to release a formal statement addressing the controversy.
