Accord Party Reacts to Governor Adeleke’s Defection, Party Factions Disagree
By Erewunmi Peace
The Accord Party has reacted to the reported defection of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, amid growing controversy over the legitimacy of his entry into the party.
In a statement circulating online, a faction of the Accord Party condemned the governor’s defection, describing it as a “back-door entry” that allegedly did not follow the party’s constitutional procedures. The group claimed that due process was not observed and warned that such actions could undermine internal party democracy.
The faction, reportedly led by Prof. Chris Imumolen, insisted that Governor Adeleke’s defection and any associated political ambitions within the party were invalid, stating that the party’s leadership structure was bypassed.
However, the official leadership of the Accord Party has strongly rejected this claim, distancing itself from the condemnation. Party officials clarified that the statement did not represent the position of the recognised national leadership.
According to the party’s national secretariat, Governor Adeleke formally joined the Accord Party through the appropriate channels, met all membership requirements, and was subsequently cleared by the party’s leadership. The party further stated that all internal processes were duly followed, describing the allegations as misleading and politically motivated.
The Accord Party leadership also noted that internal disagreements within the party have existed for some time and that some individuals issuing statements in the party’s name no longer hold recognised authority within its structure.
Political observers say the controversy reflects ongoing factional disputes within the Accord Party rather than a definitive rejection of the governor’s defection. They also caution the public to distinguish between official party positions and statements issued by dissenting groups.
As of the time of filing this report, Governor Ademola Adeleke has not publicly responded to the claims. Meanwhile, the Accord Party leadership has reaffirmed its position, urging members of the public to rely only on statements issued through the party’s recognised communication channels.
The development adds another layer to the evolving political dynamics ahead of future electoral contests in Osun State.
