Labour Party Crisis Deepens as Abure-Led NWC Warns Governor Otti, Others

By Erewunmi Peace

The leadership crisis within Nigeria’s Labour Party has further escalated as the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) issued a strong warning to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, his deputy Ikechukwu Emetu, and other party stakeholders.

In a statement released by the party’s national leadership, the NWC cautioned Governor Otti and loyalists of former presidential candidate Peter Obi against actions capable of undermining the unity and authority of the party. The warning comes amid reports of plans by some party members to convene a parallel national convention, a move the Abure faction described as unconstitutional and destabilising.

According to the NWC, any attempt to operate outside the recognised party structure could worsen the internal crisis and weaken the party ahead of future elections. The leadership insisted it remains the legally recognised authority of the Labour Party and urged aggrieved members to pursue dialogue and internal mechanisms rather than actions that could lead to further division.

The Labour Party has been grappling with internal leadership disputes since after the 2023 general elections, with several factions laying claim to control of the party. Key figures, including Governor Alex Otti and supporters of Peter Obi, have previously expressed concerns over the direction and leadership of the party.

Meanwhile, reactions from party supporters on social media continue to reflect deep divisions. While some insist on party unity, others argue that Peter Obi’s political influence could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, no official announcement has been made regarding Obi’s political future or party affiliation.

As the crisis unfolds, political observers warn that unresolved internal conflicts could affect the Labour Party’s stability and electoral prospects if not urgently addressed.
