Presidency Fires Back at Obasanjo on Security Criticism

By Erewunmi Peace

The Nigerian Presidency has responded to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s remarks on the country’s security situation, saying he is “not in a position to fault” President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement, the Presidency argued that some of today’s security challenges “took root” during Obasanjo’s administration, highlighting that attributing blame solely to the current government is misleading. It also rejected Obasanjo’s suggestion that Nigeria should seek foreign help for domestic security, calling such a move “capitulation rather than statesmanship.”

The Presidency stressed that Tinubu’s administration is tackling insecurity through a strengthened national security strategy, including increased recruitment for the police and armed forces.

While the statement defended the government’s approach, analysts note that Nigeria continues to face significant security threats, including banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism, suggesting the challenge remains complex and ongoing.
