Ogun Government Cracks Down on Landlords Amid Rising Insecurity

By Erewunmi Peace

Governor Dapo Abiodun has issued a stern warning to landlords in Ogun State as part of intensified measures to tackle escalating insecurity across the state.

The government has revealed that landlords who knowingly harbour criminals or individuals of questionable character will face strict legal consequences, including possible confiscation of property. The announcement comes as part of broader security measures targeting settlements and areas identified as hotspots for criminal activity.

Governor Abiodun specifically cited settlements such as the Zaga settlement in the Ijebu axis, which has been linked to rising crime, and emphasized that property owners must cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain public safety.

The state government has also mandated tighter registration and documentation for non-indigenes and increased scrutiny of individuals and groups perceived as security risks. Officials say these measures aim to prevent criminal elements from exploiting rental properties and public spaces.

Residents and landlords have expressed mixed reactions, with some supporting the crackdown as necessary for safety, while others worry about potential overreach and the impact on ordinary landlords renting to regular tenants.

The Ogun State Government has assured the public that all measures will be carried out in line with the law, with authorities emphasizing the importance of due process during enforcement.
