Warri-Itakpe Train Derails Days After Service Resumption

By Erewunmi Peace

A passenger train on the Warri-Itakpe line derailed on Saturday evening near Agbor, Delta State, just days after the service had resumed.

According to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m., at kilometre 212+8 metres along the route. Two of the seven coaches on board were involved.

The NRC further stated that all passengers on board were safely evacuated, and no casualties or injuries have been reported.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the derailment may have been caused by suspected track vandalism, though a full safety and infrastructure audit is ongoing.

As a precautionary measure, services on the Warri–Itakpe corridor have been temporarily suspended while recovery and inspection are underway.

This derailment comes shortly after operations on the line were resumed on October 29, 2025, following a months-long suspension due to technical issues and infrastructure repair.

Officials from the NRC expressed regret over the disruption and emphasised their commitment to ensuring the highest safety standards before resuming full operations.
