Umahi Declares Support for Tinubu Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Erewunmi Peace

Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has publicly declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that his political future is tied to the President’s re-election bid in 2027.

Umahi made the statement during a New Year message, where he addressed political leaders and residents of the South-East, urging them to support President Tinubu if he decides to contest for a second term.

According to the former Ebonyi State governor, President Tinubu’s administration has shown commitment to national inclusion, particularly toward the South-East region, through federal appointments and infrastructure development.

“Once Tinubu is on the ballot, I am also on the ballot,” Umahi was quoted as saying, explaining that the success of the President in 2027 would also reflect on political leaders who have chosen to align with his administration.

Umahi called on South-East governors and political stakeholders to avoid what he described as the “mistake” of the 2023 general elections and instead work collectively to support the President in the next election cycle.

He highlighted ongoing federal projects in the region, especially road construction and rehabilitation, as evidence of the administration’s commitment to development and national unity.

The minister, however, did not announce any intention to contest for an elective office, clarifying that his statement was a political expression of loyalty and support for the President rather than a declaration of personal ambition.

President Tinubu has not officially declared his intention to seek re-election in 2027, but comments from key allies like Umahi continue to fuel political discussions ahead of the next general elections.
